Congresswoman Bush Statement Marking Three Years Since the MAGA Insurrection on U.S. Capitol

Washington, D.C. (Jan. 6, 2024) — Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) released the following statement three years after the deadly insurrection incited by former President Donald Trump and MAGA Republican Members of Congress on the U.S. Capitol.

“Three years ago, former white supremacist-in-chief Donald Trump, aided and abetted by extremist Republican members of Congress, led a horrific, premeditated, and violent attack on our nation’s Capitol. Despite continued efforts to hold them accountable, including my resolution —H.Res 25– which calls on Congress to investigate and expel every member involved in inciting the deadly, violent insurrection, the GOP Party of Insurrection has instead been rewarded with a House Majority, Committee Chairmanships, and the continued boosting of the twice-impeached, four-times indicted Donald Trump as its leading candidate for the U.S. presidency. It’s abhorrent.

“Our country deserves better. Those who were killed, injured, and who succumbed to suicide deserve better. The many staff and Members who were forced to barricade in offices for hours deserve better. All those dealing with the horrible trauma of the attack deserve better. More than 1,200 people have been arrested and charged since that day, and many have either pleaded guilty or been convicted. With the criminal indictments by the Department of Justice and in Georgia’s Fulton County, Donald Trump may also soon be convicted for his role on January 6th and his shameless election subversion attempt. But unless and until that happens, we must continue to demand accountability for Trump’s actions and the actions of all those inside and outside of Congress who aided his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and undermine our democracy.”

The Capitol insurrection occurred on Congresswoman Bush’s third day in office. Ever since she has been calling for accountability for those responsible, and she introduced H.Res 25 to investigate and expel members of Congress who aided and abetted this violent insurrection by attempting to overturn the election.
