Congresswoman Bush Statement on 118th Congress Swearing-In
Hours after the 2nd Anniversary of January 6th, members who incited attack on Capitol are sworn into office
Washington D.C. (Jan. 7, 2022) — Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) today was officially sworn in as the United States Representative for Missouri’s First Congressional District, representing the people of St. Louis in the 118th Congress. Also, sworn-in to office were Republican Members of Congress who were involved in the organization of the January 6th insurrection against the United States Capitol, including newly-elected Speaker Congressman Kevin McCarthy (CA-20). Speaker McCarthy was formally elected to be Speaker of the House after the 15th vote.
“After four days of Republican chaos and disorder, Members were finally sworn into Congress this morning at 1:40 am. Though I am excited to finally be able to officially get to work and continue to deliver for St. Louis, rather than feel excited for my new term as Congresswoman, I can't help but feel disappointed and disturbed. Yesterday marked the second anniversary of the violent, white supremacist attack on our nation's Capitol. Hours later Members of Congress involved in planning and enabling this horrific attack were sworn into power rather than stripped of it. The new Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, was among the 147 Republicans who voted to overturn the 2020 election. I can't help but question where the accountability is, and why these Members are met with rewards rather than reprimands. I will never stop pushing for accountability, just as I will never stop fighting for the people of St. Louis and our country. Democracy and justice will prevail.”
The 118th Congress marks Congresswoman Bush’s second term in the United States House of Representatives. The Capitol insurrection occurred on Congresswoman Bush’s third day in office and ever since, she has been a fierce advocate for accountability for those responsible. Immediately after the attack, she introduced H.Res 25 to investigate and expel members of Congress that aided and abetted this violent insurrection.
