Congresswoman Bush Urges EPA Investigate Toxic Fumes in South St. Louis

Washington D.C. (Apr. 14, 2023) — Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) sent a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 Administrator Meg McCollister requesting that the EPA immediately conduct an investigation into the toxic fumes and odors impacting south St. Louis.

“These fumes have persisted in [our neighborhoods] for years, and residents often feel they cannot venture outside of their homes as the fumes are so debilitating,” wrote Congresswoman Bush. “I am concerned that these odors could be causing grave physical harm, as numerous constituents have expressed concerns that they believe the air is leading to adverse health outcomes for them and their families.”

This letter comes in response to concerns from constituents in Mt. Pleasant, McKinley Heights, Gravois Park, Marine Villa, Benton Park, Lafayette Square, and Soulard neighborhoods who have expressed about the impact inhaling these fumes may have on their health and safety. The Congresswoman requested that EPA Region 7 Administrator McCollister respond by Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023.
