Cori Bush Nominated to Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) will participate in her first hearing as a Member of the esteemed Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, under the leadership of Co-Chairs Jim McGovern (MA-02) and Chris Smith (NJ-04).
“Our foreign policy must be rooted in a love for all of humanity,” said Congresswoman Cori Bush. “This moment demands a clear commitment to a foreign policy centered on human rights and diplomacy. We must address the real threats of climate change in communities of color and across the Global South, the forced expulsion of Black people in Europe and the Americas, and the socioeconomic demands of young people throughout the world. My commitment to human rights has always been the core of my work in Congress, as I am legislating for those unhoused, for those protesters often criminalized for their beliefs, and for those patients in need of universal care. I am humbled to be welcomed onto the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. Together with Co-Chairs McGovern and Smith, I look forward to contributing to our pursuit for a more just world.”
“I am thrilled to welcome Congresswoman Cori Bush to the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission,” said Congressman Jim McGovern. “Having worked together to fight for environmental justice, extend the eviction moratorium, and protect the right to vote, I know that her moral courage and clarity of conscience on issues of human rights will be a tremendous asset to the Commission. I look forward to expanding our partnership on human rights issues around the globe.”
As a Member of the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees, the Congresswoman’s position on the Lantos Commission will provide St. Louis with even greater representation in conversations around equality and access.
