Congresswoman Bush, Mayor Jones Statement on One Year Anniversary of Historic Flooding in St. Louis Region
Washington D.C. (July 26, 2023)—Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) and St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones released the following statement one year after the devastating flooding impacted the St. Louis region.
“On this day one year ago, St. Louis got two months' worth of rain in 6 hours, leaving much of our community under water. This historic flooding completely devastated our community. Once the rain stopped and our community was left to deal with the damage, I remember walking door to door, neighbor to neighbor, seeing loss everywhere I looked. From cars underwater to businesses gutted to basements and belongings destroyed, witnessing this devastation impacted me beyond words,” said Congresswoman Bush.“I’m proud to have been able to secure federal assistance, over $82 million in disaster funding for the St. Louis Region following the flooding, and to deliver $214 million in investments for nationwide, including for Bi-State Development in St. Louis. However, the truth of the matter is that many in our community are still recovering from the aftermath. That is why I remain committed to continuing to push for the funding and assistance that our community still needs to fully recover from this disaster. It’s also why I am committed to urgently tackling the climate crisis. The climate crisis is already here — last year's flood and this year's heat wave are indicative of that. I will not stop legislating and pushing for policies that prevent further harm to our communities and save lives. ”
“One year ago, St. Louisans came together to support each other after historic rainfall and flash-flooding devastated our city. Departments across city government moved quickly to deliver immediate relief to those impacted in coordination with community partners including the Urban League and United Way as well as state and federal emergency agencies,” said St. Louis Mayor Jones.“And our recovery is still ongoing. The City has submitted our application to the State Emergency Management Agency for FEMA's buyout program, and we remain in communication with both our emergency management partners as well as the community through this complex process. This was a difficult moment for our city, but even a year later, I remain inspired by the overwhelming community spirit that arose to meet it. Thank you to President Joe Biden's administration as well as Congresswoman Cori Bush for delivering additional resources to our communities to help us recover and prevent future incidents.”
