Congresswoman Bush Statement on Averting Republican-Instigated Government Shutdown

Washington, D.C. (Sept. 30, 2023)— Today, Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) released the following statement after Congress passed a continuing resolution, or temporary stop-gap measure, to avoid a lapse in federal government funding through November 17, 2023.

“Today, millions of people across our country were left to wonder if tomorrow they would have access to food, housing, and a regular paycheck, all because MAGA Republicans in Congress were carelessly catapulting our government toward a shutdown in an effort to deliver on their far-right agenda. I proudly joined Congressional Democrats in averting a potentially catastrophic government shutdown.

“While this temporary stop-gap measure is not perfect, I voted for it because the provisions it contains are workable in the near term, and doesn’t contain disastrous cuts to our social safety net, which make up MAGA Republicans’ harmful, racist and extreme agenda. But our work is not over. The looming threat of a Republican-led shutdown next month remains.

“Since the MAGA Republican Caucus took control of the House majority, they have held our communities hostage. They will not rest until they deliver on their extreme, racist, and harmful agenda, even if it means shutting down the federal government and slashing life-saving programs like housing and nutrition assistance. We have many fights ahead of us in the coming weeks and months to stave off their partisan attacks on basic services for our most vulnerable community members. St. Louis, I will never stop fighting to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.”
