Congresswoman Bush Statement on the International Court of Justice’s Landmark Advisory Opinion

Washington D.C. (July 20, 2024)—Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) released the following statement in response to the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion calling for the end of the Israeli government’s illegal occupation and system of apartheid in the occupied Palestinian territories.

“The International Court of Justice reaffirmed what we already knew: the Israeli government’s occupation and system of apartheid in Palestine are illegal under international law. It has long been clear that the Israeli government’s policies of occupation, apartheid and genocide violate international law, and that the U.S. government is violating domestic and international law by bankrolling and enabling them. Congress must heed the calls of the International Court of Justice, International Criminal Court, and the entire international community, by ending further arms sales to the Israeli government and by revoking the invitation for war criminal Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress. As I have consistently said, we must facilitate a permanent ceasefire, ensure the safe release of hostages and those arbitrarily detained, and support a just and lasting peace that protects the right to self-determination for Palestinians and Israelis alike. Throughout my tenure, I have consistently opposed human rights violations at home and abroad. My solidarity is not conditional, and I will continue to support the humanity and dignity of all people, without exception.”
