Congresswoman Bush Urges Archivist to Publish the Equal Rights Amendment on the 101st Anniversary of the ERA’s Unveiling
Washington D.C. (July 21, 2024) — Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01), co-chair of the Congressional Caucus for the Equal Rights Amendment released the following statement on the 101st anniversary of the unveiling of the Equal Rights Amendment.
“On this day 101 years ago, the Equal Rights Amendment was first unveiled. Today the ERA has met all the constitutional requirements to become the 28th Amendment—all that’s standing in the way is some paperwork,” said Congresswoman Cori Bush. “As Republicans and the Supreme Court’s extremist majority continue to attack access to abortion care, contraception, and LGBTQ+ rights, the ERA is needed now more than ever to protect our communities. I’m urging the Archivist to fulfill her ministerial duty by certifying and publishing the Equal Rights Amendment and affirming it as the 28th Amendment. 101 years of advocacy have brought us to this moment, and we refuse to wait a minute longer to cement constitutional gender equality as the law of the land in St. Louis, Missouri, and across the nation.”
In July 2023, Congresswoman Cori Bush and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) introduced the ERA Now Resolution, urging the Archivist of the United States, Colleen Shogan, to certify the state ratifications of the ERA and publish the Equal Rights Amendment in the federal register, cementing it as a formal part of the U.S. Constitution. In the past year, the ERA Now Resolution has gained 123 cosponsors.
